National Cup Recap
FC ATHLETICO Fall Short in National Cup Final in Denver, Colorado.
FC ATHLETICO U13 Dortmund’s impressive unbeaten run in post-season play ended in the National Cup Final against a strong AC Brea team from California.
Dortmund went into the event missing several key players from their roster, calling up five players from their 2011 team to participate in the 2023 US Club National Cup.
After the game, FC ATHLETICO founder Tinashe Mugabe said, “We are proud to have reached the final, but we are disappointed not to have won the Championship. AC Brea is a well-coached team with strong individual players who work well collectively.”
FC ATHLETICO Dortmund started the US Club National Cup event with a 3-1 win against Socal Pride FC before a 2-2 draw against Phoenix Rising. Dortmund went into their final group game against FC Hurst, needing a win to guarantee a place in the semi-final. FC ATHLETICO secured a 2-1 victory to finish on top of their 6-team group, which pitted them against South Orlando on Tuesday morning. After trailing by a goal in the first half of the semi-final, FC ATHLETICO Dortmund produced another resilient performance to secure a 2-1 win and a place in the final.
“We earned our place in this final, but at the end of the day, it seemed to be a step too far for us. Our commitment to player development allowed us to compete against some of the best teams in the country, despite missing several players from the team that won the NC Fusion Cup in May and US Club Southeast Regionals. We are proud of all the players who represented the club well.
